Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Climate City, USA

Perceptual Informatics was launched in 2018 to transform the way that environmental businesses mitigate risk and measure value. The firm has expertise in environmental science, machine learning, automation, remote sensing, imaging, economics, and finance. Collectively, we help firms mitigate risk and maximize value through science, technology, and finance.

Microsoft became an official supporter of Perceptual Informatics by awarding the firm a grant to develop a software platform to demonstrate the economic effects that climate change will have on the agriculture industry by leveraging artificial intelligence and satellite imagery. Microsoft additionally invited the team to Microsoft's headquarters in Redmond, Washington for a week of hands-on collaboration and programming, including a session with the Azure Maps team.

In Q4-2019, Clemson University partnered with Perceptual Informatics to Fight Forest Fragmentation. The firm will build an AI-powered platform, leveraging GIS geospatial tools, citizen science, and Microsoft AI to deliver a global forest fragmentation database with AI-alerts.

Located in 'Climate City', the team has collaborated with leading scientists and entrepreneurs in environmental science, application development, and risk management to develop a proprietary system that enables businesses and governments to become more agile and cost effective with innovative solutions.

Bjorn Brooks, Ph.D., M.Sc.

Bjorn Brooks is a cross-disciplinary environmental scientist. Since 2009 his work has centered on creating new knowledge and developing observational systems for measuring change in physical systems and forests. His research focus includes the application of statistics, numerical analysis, and modeling to measure whole system biological interaction though land-atmosphere fluxes and remote sensing, as well as studying land management issues.

Bjorn has worked as a scientist with the Center for Climatic Research in Madison, Wisconsin, St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, and the US Forest Service in Asheville, North Carolina. He holds a patent for a mobile device for measuring gas leaks in the energy sector. This technology is in-use and has the support of dozens of partner companies, regulators, and organizations working to reduce emissions quickly and sensibly.

Bjorn holds B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biology and geology from Iowa State University, and an M.Sc. from the University of Bristol, England.
